Punjab FC have also retained Juan Mera and Kiran Limbu
Punjab FC have announced the contract extension of Slovenian International Luka Majcen. The 33-year-old striker has signed a new one-year deal with the club, keeping him at the Roundglass foundation-owned outfit until the end of the 2023-24 season.
Majcen was a key player for Punjab FC in their I-League winning campaign last season. He scored 16 goals in 20 appearances, finishing as the league’s top scorer. The Slovenian was also named the Hero of the League, awarded to the player who has had the most impact on the season. Majcen’s contract extension is a major boost for Punjab FC as they prepare for their first season in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). The club will be looking to build on their success in the I-League and will be looking to create their place in the Indian first division.
Majcen is a proven goalscorer. He has contributed to 52 goals in 48 I-League appearances. The 33-year-old centre-forward also scored 56 goals in the Slovenian first division. The Slovenian is a versatile striker who can play as a lone striker or in a two-striker partnership. He is also a good aerial threat and is capable of scoring goals from long range.
Luka’s contract extension is a major statement of intent from Punjab FC. The club are determined to make an impact in the ISL next season, and Majcen will be a key player in their plans. So far they have trusted their ‘I-League Champion’ side and haven’t changed and chopped much. Most of the core squad is being retained by them. Which may also be a good denominator for the gap between I-League and ISL defences.
Apart from Luka, the newly promoted club has also extended the contract of the Nepal National Team captain Kiran Kumar Limbu and Spanish midfielder Juan Mera. They are also said to be in talks with former FC Goa captain Edu Bedia. It would be interesting to see how would their squad take shape for their debut in ISL.
