In a sensational display of skill and determination, Indian football powerhouse Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured their place in the prestigious AFC Cup with a resounding victory over Abahani Dhaka.
The stage was set for an epic showdown as both teams battled for the coveted AFC Cup qualification spot. From the first whistle, it was evident that Mohun Bagan had come prepared to dominate the game. Their strategy was clear – a combination of swift attacks and rock-solid defense.
Juan Ferrando was forced to make a couple of changes to the squad, with new signing Hector Yuste coming in for the side-lined Brendan Hamill who was not well. Armando Sadiku supplanted Dimitri Petratos, who was notably omitted from the squad due to medical reasons. In spite of that, Mohun Bagan started the game well with attacks from the flanks by Liston Colaco. Unlike the other days, he looked very sharp today with his clinical crosses. Although Cummings was not able to utilize the crosses and convert them to goals.
The match was gearing up well, with both teams playing attacking football and hitting each other on the counter. However, Dhaka Abahani applied the pace of their strikers to hit the Mariners on the break. The Bangladeshi side’s strategies certainly paid bonuses as they grabbed the lead against the run of play in the 17th minute. Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith very unlikely, scrabbled a routine catch and Dhaka’s forward Cornelius Stewart made the most of the opportunity to slide the ball into the back of the net.
Despite conceding the early goal, the Mariners continued to thrust for the equalizer. Consequently, Sahal and Cummings combined excitingly and were very close to scoring the equalizer. Mohun Bagan with likes of Liston, Sahal, and Hugo were dangerously exploiting the Dhaka defense. Hence, the pressure finally paid off in the 35th minute when Dhaka Abahani’s full-back cynically brought down Liston Colaco in the penalty box. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot as Australian international Jason Cummings confidently scored the penalty to level the proceedings.
Mohun Bagan was dominating the game with their creation of chances. Although like their previous encounter against Machinda FC, they lacked the finish. Before the first-half whistle, Jason had the opportunity of scoring his brace. Nevertheless, he could not connect the volley from Subhasish Bose’s cross from the left. Additionally, in the injury time, Dhaka Abahani had the chance to take the lead with David Ifegwu’s header progressing in and hitting the post after getting a deflection for Vishal Kaith.
As the second half commenced, the intensity on the field escalated. Mohun Bagan’s midfield maestros controlled the game, ensuring possession and creating numerous opportunities.
Conversely, Dhaka Abahani was unbendable at the back, resorting to numerous lunging tackles and essential clearances to keep the scores level. Nonetheless, the ISL Champions prospered in captivating the lead through a beautiful third-man movement in the 58th minute. A move started by Cummings in the middle, to Liston on right back to Cummings who skilfully gave a through to Bomous whose cross was deflected in by Milad.
The third goal followed around the hour mark, with Sadiku scoring his debut goal for the Mariners. A quick corner caught Abahani off guard, with Liston and Sadiku combining to slot the ball past the stranded goalie. The home crowd erupted with joy, and the atmosphere was electric. The stands reverberated with chants and cheers as fans showed their unwavering support for the team. Mohun Bagan’s players responded to the energy, continuing to press forward.
The rapid goals ultimately put the Mariners in the driver’s seat, as they took their foot off the gas in the final phases of the contest. Ferrando decided to make a few substitutions and yet they continued to control the events. Substitutes Manvir Singh and Kiyan also got opportunities to put their names on the scoresheet but failed.
Hector Yuste was the man of steel for the Mariners as he made a perfect debut for the green and maroon brigade. He was sensational in the air as well as with his crunching tackles. He was leading the defense along with the likes of Anwar.
