During the Durand Cup semifinal match between NorthEast United FC and East Bengal FC at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati stadium, commonly known as Salt Lake stadium, a disturbing incident unfolded involving students from the Northeast and Darjeeling. The students allegedly faced racial slurs and encountered aggression from East Bengal fans, leading to concerns about safety and inclusivity at sporting events.

According to students who spoke with The Indian Express, the trouble began about an hour after the conclusion of the Durand Cup semi-final. Following a 2-2 draw in regular time, East Bengal emerged as winners in a penalty shootout. The students claim that they had to be escorted out by the Army and police due to the escalating tension.

Though an official complaint has not yet been lodged, students recounted their unsettling experience. They alleged that derogatory remarks were directed at them, including racial slurs, and objects like stones and slippers were thrown by East Bengal supporters. The situation became so intense that security personnel had to intervene to ensure the students’ safety.

“Adequate security measures were in place like in all the matches and separate stands are earmarked for fans of both teams. Emotions run high in matches, especially in closely competed ones. Phone numbers of both police and Army personnel are given to all the spectators and fans before the match. Both police and Army personnel are present during matches. That is why no untoward incident happened like injury to someone or damage to property.”

Raja Guha, a member of the working committee of East Bengal Club, stated that he was present during the match and did not witness any such incidents. Mandar Tamhane, CEO of North East United, did not respond to calls.

As videos of the alleged incident circulated on social media, The Indian Express spoke to multiple students who wished to remain anonymous. According to their accounts, the trouble began on their way to the stadium in the metro, where they were reportedly subjected to derogatory comments by East Bengal supporters.

As North East United scored their first goal, objects were allegedly hurled at students from the East Bengal fan section. Allegedly, racial slurs and offensive gestures were used, creating a hostile environment. Northeast and Darjeeling students took shelter due to aggression, seeking refuge under the stadium’s cover.
