Gill becomes the most expensive goalkeeper ever in ISL
Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, the Golden Glove winner of the 2021-2022 Hero Indian Super League season has recently joined the Kolkata-based historic East Bengal FC. The 22-year-old joins the Red and Gold Brigade on a three-year deal, as they paid a 1.2 crore INR transfer fee to his previous club, Kerala Blasters FC.
The youngster from Punjab still had a year left on his contract but he chose to don the Lal Holud for the upcoming ISL season. East Bengal secured his signature after winning the tug-of-war with the Blasters who wanted their #1 goalie to extend, making him the highest-earning goalkeeper in the Indian first division.
Gill is the product of AIFF Elite Academy and has featured for the Indian Arrows, later he joined the Bengaluru FC for a short one-year stint. He made headlines when he was brought into the playing 11 by the Kerala Blasters head coach, Ivan Vukomanovic, replacing the injured Albino Gomez. The Ludhiana-born goalkeeper managed to keep 7 clean sheets in 20 matches, conceding only 21 goals and making him win the Golden Glove ahead of established names in the Indian goalkeeper’s union. His heroics helped the Kerala-based club to reach the finals of the Indian Super League, where they narrowly lost out to Hyderabad FC. Last season as well he put up a decent performance with clean sheets in 19 games. Based on his domestic performances he was also called up by Igor Stimac to the national team, where he didn’t manage to get a breakthrough in the playing 11.
East Bengal, known for their rich footballing heritage, secured their place in the Indian Super League just a couple of seasons ago. Gill’s arrival at the club signals their determination to build a competitive squad capable of challenging the league’s top teams. With ISL-winning coach Carles Caudrat and foreigners with ISL, EB looks to make a competitive squad. Apart from Prabhsukhan Gill, his brother, defender Gursimrat Singh Gill will join the torch-bearers. Also, earlier this window Nandha Kumar Sekar, Javi Siverio, Borja Herrera, Saul Crespo, Nishu Kumar, Edwin Sydney Vanspaul, Mandar Rao Desai, and Harmanjot Khabra joined the historic club.
